The Environmental Investigations Section has responsibilities to include but is not limited to responding to illegal dumping, hazardous material spills and other environmentally sensitive calls. The Environmental Investigations Section also assists the South Florida Water Management District with enforcing water restriction violations. In 2010, the Sheriff’s Office responded to 105 environmental calls for service and conducted more than 40 investigations. This unit works closely with state and federal agencies regarding environmental investigations. The Detective assigned to this unit participates at the state Emergency Operations Center in Tallahassee, where responsibilities include organizing and disseminating personnel and equipment to targeted areas after disaster hits.
This photo is from a case of felony littering over 500 pounds. The truck pictured is from a commercial tire company in South Florida, that entered a secluded piece of land in Western Martin County with a payload of old tires that were to being transported to the recycling plant in St. Lucie County. The driver decided to dump the load on private property when the vehicle became disabled. The driver and passenger were arrested.
