The Drug Diversion Unit is tasked with investigations concerning prescription fraud, pill mills, doctor shopping and organizations involved with illegal sale and trafficking of scheduled medications.  In 2011 this unit investigated 125 cases resulting in 22 arrests.  The detective assigned to this unit also works with state and federal agencies regarding investigations that cross jurisdictional boundaries.

The Operation Medicine Cabinet program is overseen by this unit, working to provide locations for members of the public to dispose of unwanted or outdated prescription medications for proper disposal.   As part of the Operation Medicine Cabinet program a receptacle has been placed in the lobby of the Martin County Sheriff’s Office for use as a collection point.  Over 725 pounds of medications were collected in 2011.
