The Martin County Sheriff 's Office Bomb Disposal Unit was formed in the early 1980's to respond to suspected and real explosive device calls, and has since expanded to handle all calls for service that include improvised explosive devices, commercial explosives, military ordnance, suspicious packages/letters, and hoax devices. The Bomb Disposal Unit also provides training to government institutions, private business establishments and other agencies in regards to bomb threat emergency procedures. The Bomb Disposal Unit is also trained in Dignitary Security as well as response to Weapons of Mass Destruction.

The Martin County Sheriff 's Office Bomb Disposal Unit is made up of highly trained Deputies that have met very strict Federal Standards to carry the title of Bomb Technician. The Deputies assigned to this unit are volunteers and have other primary assignments with the Martin County Sheriff's Office.

The Deputies assigned to this unit train regularly in locating, disarming and destruction of explosive devices, real or hoax throughout Martin County, as well as receiving training regarding Hazardous Materials. The members of the Bomb Disposal Unit are trained in the use of the newest technology to render safe explosive devices that may be a threat to the citizens of Martin County. The members of the Bomb Disposal Unit also conduct follow-up investigations of all incidents that involve the use of a hoax or live explosive devices, as well as investigations of fireworks accidents.

The Bomb Disposal Unit Deputies are available to respond to assist other agencies including local, state or federal when requested

The Bomb Disposal Unit is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
