Sgt. Brian Gervais

Sgt. Brian Gervais has been with the Martin County Sheriff's Office since 1989, where he began his career in the Department of Corrections. In 1992, he was transferred to the Road Patrol Division as a Deputy Sheriff.

In 1995, Sgt. Gervais transferred into the Criminal Investigations Division, where he served for nine years as a Detective. During his tenure in the Criminal Investigations Division he worked in the General Assignment Unit, the Child Abuse/Sex Crimes Unit, and then the Economic Crimes Unit.

Since February 2004, Sgt. Brian Gervais has been an Investigator in the Professional Standards Unit. His work now includes conducting Internal Affairs investigations, doing pre-employment interviews and background checks, and assisting C.I.D. detectives with ongoing criminal investigations.

Sgt. Gervais is a certified C.V.S.A. (Computer Voice Stress Analysis) examiner.

The function of the Professional Standards Unit is to provide fact-finding assistance to the Sheriff and his staff. The Professional Standards Unit will provide a systematic, objective and impartial investigation of all complaints of inappropriate behavior against Sheriff's personnel. The Professional Standards Unit reports directly to the Sheriff and/or Undersheriff.

The Martin County Sheriff's Office established the Professional Standards Unit to investigate allegations of misconduct and corruption. When a citizen complaint is received, every effort is made to ensure a thorough, timely and fair investigation of the allegation (s) contained in the complaint. The openness of the Agency in the acceptance of a complaint is a principle element of professionalism and community responsiveness. The Professional Standards Unit is currently comprised of one Lieutenant, two Sergeants and one administrative assistant. The Professional Standards Unit duties include: · Investigating alleged misconduct by agency employees.
· Providing staff assistance to line supervisors in investigations of alleged misconduct by departmental employees.
· Investigating critical incidents (i.e., employee involved shootings).
· Record, register, and control the investigation of complaints against employees.
· Investigate all complaints reported by inmates in our Corrections facilities.
· Maintain the confidentiality of the Professional Standards Unit investigations and records.
· Conduct all pre-employee background investigations and polygraphs relative to our hiring process.
· Review and process each employment application and make hiring recommendations.
