Directed Operations Division - School Resource Officers

Lt. Morgan Sprott (772) 219-1200

Sgt. Steve Mochen (772) 219-1200

The School Resource Officer's program consist of twelve Deputy Sheriff's. These deputies are supervised by a Lieutenant and a Sergeant. They are assigned to work within the Middle and High Schools as well as the Alternative and Special Needs Schools in the Martin County school system. There are two deputies assigned to instruct the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program at 10 elementary schools. During the 2008-2009 school year, over 1,500 children graduated from the D.A.R.E. program.

Each deputy is required by the Florida Attorney General's Office to be certified in a 40 hour class as a School Resource Officer in addition to their normal certification as a deputy sheriff. Each deputy actively maintains membership in the Florida Association of School Resource Officers (F.A.S.R.O.) and is given special training with juvenile laws, child abuse, gang awareness, designer drugs, crisis management, critical incident planning and searches within a school. With over 18,500 children in our school system, the School Resource Officer has become an integral part of the school system.

In the 2008-2009 school year, deputies accounted for 210 arrests ranging from battery on a school board employee, possession of weapons, possession of drugs, burglary, and a number of other charges and recovered $6,484 in stolen property.  They were assigned 272 case numbers and handled 4,819 complaints on the school campuses.

This school year we continued our focus on keeping our students drug and alcohol free. D.U.I. goggles were purchased to help educate our students about the harmful effects of drinking and driving.

Members of our School Resource Officer's Unit take great pride in serving as regional Directors for Florida Association of School Resource Officers (F.A.S.R.O) Program, as well as instruct for the Vice President for the Florida Attorney General's Office, the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E) and many other state and local organizations.
