Gang activity affects the safety and quality of life for all residents, businesses and visitors to Martin County. A small number of gang members can commit numerous crimes and destroy a neighborhood.  Gang members participate in a highly destructive lifestyle; centered on a negative attitude, and supported by the commission of crimes.  Gangs affect all races, sexes, educational and economic levels of society.  There are several types of gangs to include, street gangs, motorcycle gangs, prison gangs, hate groups, and terrorist organizations. There is a new trend for these different types of gangs to interact in order to make money and further their agendas.

Florida State Statue 874.03 defines a Criminal Gang as a “formal or informal ongoing organization, association, or group that has as one of its primary activities the commission of criminal or delinquent acts, and that consists of three or more persons who have a common name or common identifying signs, colors, or symbols, including, but not limited to, terrorist organizations and hate groups.”

The primary mission of the Gang Unit is the reduction of gang related crimes and activity in Martin County.  This unit serves as a central location for the collection and dissemination of gang related information and works with federal, state and local agencies.  Gang Awareness Training Classes are provided to law enforcement agencies, schools, social service agencies, and community organizations by Gang Unit personnel.

It takes a working partnership among law enforcement, government agencies, schools, businesses, and community groups to combat gangs. Please contact the Martin County Sheriff’s Office if you observe any signs of gang activity.
