When the children of Martin County leave the comfort of their homes, the first contact they have with their respective school is the school crossing guard.  The priority of the crossing guard is the safety of the children. They educate children on the proper way to cross the street or how important it is to wear a bicycle helmet.

Supervisor Thely Murphy

Each new crossing guard must complete specialized training and be certified by the State of Florida.  They are equipped with Martin County Sheriff’s Office sanctioned uniforms which include neon-colored vests and gloves; caps, hats, whistles, and flashlights.

The school crossing guards cover fourteen (14) schools and are inclusive of over fifty (50) crossings.  Some of the crossings have high volume of traffic; pedestrian and vehicular.  These special people are prepared to handle the crossing and some may even assist by directing traffic; however, their main responsibility is to the children safely crossing the streets.  Remember, the school crossing guard is a friend to the little citizens of Martin County.

*School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day is celebrated statewide every February.*
