Directed Operations Division - Community Patrol Unit

Lieutenant Wes Starling

Community Policing Supervisor:
Sergeant Ryan Grimsdale
(772) 220-7013

Community policing is a full service law enforcement philosophy which focuses on crime and social disorder through the delivery of police services that includes aspects of traditional law enforcement, as well as prevention, problem-solving, community engagement, and partnerships. Community policing balances reactive responses to calls for service with proactive problem-solving centered on the causes of crime and disorder. The Community policing requires law enforcement and citizens to join together as partners in the course of both identifying and effectively addressing these issues.

The Community Policing Unit is part of the Directed Operations Division and has the unique assignment of patrolling targeted areas throughout the county with the goal of reducing crime and promoting safer communities. Deputies assigned to this unit patrol in marked vehicles, on bicycle and on foot. This makes them more accessible to the citizens of the areas where they are assigned. The Community Policing Unit is the direct link between the community and the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. This section is responsible for the Crime Prevention and Community Programs functions and places emphasis on heavy community involvement to accomplish problem solving. The deputies of this unit have organized neighborhood watches, crime prevention and personnel safety presentations.

Throughout Martin County, the Community Policing Unit has specially trained deputies assigned to targeted areas to address community concerns through proactive and innovative approaches. These areas include Jensen Beach, Fisherman’s Cove / Martin’s Crossings, Palm City, Golden Gate, Port Salerno, Banner Lake (Hobe Sound), South County and Indiantown. These deputies work closely with community members and other governmental agencies to assist in promoting positive change through consistent positive interaction.
