The Technical Services Unit is comprised of a team of five members including Stephen J. Walter, the unit supervisor. Deputy Walter has been a law enforcement officer for 22 years. He came to the Martin County Sheriff's Office in 2003 where he worked in the Traffic/DUI unit and, later, the Technical Services Unit. Prior to coming to the Sheriff’s Office, he worked in the private sector as a programmer writing law enforcement software for small to medium-sized agencies. In 2008, Sheriff Crowder selected Sergeant Walter to head the Technical Services Unit.

The Technical Services Unit oversees the design, implementation and maintenance of the Sheriff's Office computer and network system. More than 600 users throughout the agency along with other agencies in Martin County rely on this unit for efficient communication and data services. This unit is responsible for all IT equipment used by the Sheriff's Office. This unit oversees the operation and maintenance of the Martin County E911 systems located in the Sheriff's Office Dispatch Center, Fire Rescue Dispatch Center, and Stuart Police Department Dispatch Center. During 2004, this unit supervised and aided the complete replacement of all E911 systems in Martin County to maintain phase two wireless compatibility.

The Technical Services Unit oversees hundreds of pieces of equipment at the Sheriff's Office including:

· Over 300 desktop computers

· Over 200 laptop computers

· More than 600 e-mail addresses
