For 2011 the property room received approximately 5,482 items of evidence. Through diligent efforts an estimated 500 items were purged from the estimated 90,899 items currently being held in the property room. The unit purges property by either returning it to the owner, issuing it for department use or it is properly destroyed.
Another function of the Property Unit is to research cases through the Office of the State Attorney and Clerk of the Circuit Court to ensure that cases where evidence being held has been finalized and a hold on the evidence is no longer needed. In each case that is finalized, a disposal letter form is sent out to each case officer to determine the final outcome of the property. In cases where narcotics are involved, an informative request form must be submitted to the State Attorney for a court order allowing the destruction of such items. These important functions require many painstaking hours to perform.
